“The Decision” deserves a deep rewind

LeBron James has now departed Cleveland for a bigger market twice in his career. The 2018 version — leaving the Cavaliers to sign with the Los Angeles Lakerswent like this. It’s a jaw-dropping move, for sure, but it was executed pretty quickly and quietly, considering its magnitude.

LeBron’s prior departure from Cleveland, in 2010, was quite different. Everyone remembers James telling the world he’d chosen to sign with the Miami Heat by announcing “I will be taking my talents to South Beach,” but how well do you remember everything that came before it? There’s almost too much to remember: Teams preparing for years to open cap space, 6 hand-picked teams flying to Cleveland to make pitches to the reigning MVP, a frantic Cleveland campaign to keep LeBron in his home state, a deep free agent class that revolved around LeBron, and a wild avalanche of rumors in the days leading up to the July 8 “Decision” TV special.
